Why does sending USDT burn TRX?
Send USDT on TRON and 6 to 13 TRX can vanish from your wallet. The amount doesn't matter — sending 1 USDT or 10,000 USDT costs the same.
A USDT transfer runs a contract
USDT on TRON (TRC20) is a token built on a smart contract. Sending it means the network executes that contract, and executing a contract takes a resource called energy.
No energy? TRX gets burned
If your wallet has no energy, the network burns TRX to cover what's missing. Typically:
- Recipient already holds USDT: about 65,000 energy, or about 6.5 TRX
- Recipient holds no USDT: about 131,000 energy, or about 13.1 TRX
Renting energy is much cheaper
Energy is produced by people who stake large amounts of TRX. Rent it for one hour and the same transfer costs 2.4 TRX (65,000) or 4.8 TRX (131,000) — over 60% less than burning.
You also need a little bandwidth
Besides energy, a transfer uses a bit of bandwidth. Activated wallets get some free bandwidth every day, so usually you don't need to think about it. If you send many times a day and use it up, each transfer may burn about 0.35 TRX.
